John H. Pilling AIA was a project architect and principal for 22 years before starting Pilling + Smith. His prior work includes residential site planning, an amusement park, the MBTA's Forest Hills Station, the Hatch Shell restoration study, Apollo Computer's headquarters in Chelmsford, and the Canary Wharf Eastern Segment master plan in London, England. His projects at Pilling + Smith include St.. Margaret's Hospital / St. Mary’s Women & Infants Center conversion, the Phoenix House, Neighborhood House Charter School, the Fox Center, Harbor Area Childhood Services and work for Boston EMS.
Mr.. Pilling received a BA from Dartmouth College and a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He has served the Boston Architectural College as a member of its faculty, board, and committees since 1994.
Mark S. Smith AIA, LEED AP BD+C began his career as a designer - builder in the 1970’s. Before starting Pilling + Smith, he was a project architect for 176 Federal Street in Boston and a system wide signage project for the MBTA. Since forming Pilling + Smith he has been responsible for the renovation of the main lobby at Carney Hospital , CAPIC's Head Start in Chelsea, historic rehabilitation projects such as the Zakrzewska Building in Roxbury and design guidelines for 3-11 School Street in downtown Boston. North Shore Head Start, CAPIC’s Client Services Center and Maplewood Country Day Camp & Enrichment Center.
Mr.. Smith received his BA from Raymond College, University of the Pacific and his Bachelor of Architecture from the Boston Architectural College.
Pilling+Smith’s working relationship with structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers dates from the beginning of the our partnership. As with our own practice, we retain principal or senior level people to address each project’s design problems. We retain the services of professional cost estimators, materials experts / specification writers, and code consultants regularly, because we appreciate the timeliness of the advice they provide about our constantly evolving industry.
